About Burghope Manor
Offering the best in bed and breakfast, a stay at Burghope Manor in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere will enable you to touch the very fabric of a great country's history and to see with your own eyes the living proof of a medieval heritage lovingly preserved and enhanced by its proud and caring owners. Although steeped in history, the Manor has been carefully modernised so that its wealth of historical features are complemented by present-day comforts which include full central heating and attractively furnished bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms (see pictures below). Guests are requested not to smoke during their stay at Burghope Manor which is our family home and an irreplaceable part of our national heritage.
Burghope Manor is a classic example of a medieval manor house. Dating from the 13th Century, Burghope has strong links with the reign of England's most flamboyant and rumbustious monarch, Henry V111. The Manor has associations with the King's prelate Archbishop Cramner The Cranmer Room at Burghope is made especially interesting by the large fireplace, engraved with Elizabethan writing, which fills almost the entire side of the room. Burghope's links with the past go back many centuries further. During excavations, a curious leather shield was discovered which dates to the reign of Alfred the Great (848-899 AD). This shield is now in The Tower of London.
Burghope is situated in peaceful country side with secure private parking away from the hustle and bustle of busy Bath streets yet only 10 minutes drive to the city centre. The manor is ideally placed and easily accessible by road or rail. The M4 motorway only 20 minutes by car (Heathrow Airport can be reached in 90 minutes) - and by rail London is little more than an hour away by 125 intercity express from Bath Spa.
Burghope is ideally situated for touring the West Country, a region of Britain with a unique and fascinating character of its own which still reflects its swashbuckling and mystical past. It is a land of legend and literature; of history and heroics ....the bringing of the Holy Grail to Glastonbury; King Arthur and the Round Table; the Druids of Stonehenge and Avebury; Sir Francis Drake and the Spanish Armada; Thomas Hardy's Dorset; the Exmoor of Lorna Doone; the romance of the sea, its captains, pirates and smugglers. Then there is the West Country's own exotic food and drink - farmhouse cider; cream teas; Somerset apples and Cheddar cheese; Cornish pasties; - the list is almost endless. For those seeking an active outdoor life it is the centre of an area which boasts superlative sports facilities which include golf, riding, fishing, horse racing and cricket. For the quieter moments there are theatres, museums and places of great historic interest, the magnificent cathedrals of Salisbury and Wells, and the Abbeys of Bath and Glastonbury.
A stay at Burghope will give you a taste of the English heritage at its finest and England's glorious West Country.
